Our Favorite Moments At Mellon Arena

Job Fair at Melon Arena

The last event at Mellon arena can also be one of the most helpful. On July 13th, The EmploymentGuide.com and the The Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh will host a job fair that aims to help the local community get back to an exciting time in their own lives, much like the Mellon Arena has enriched lives over its history.

As we look towards the future of Pittsburgh, today I wanted to take a look back at some of the moments that shaped our lives at Mellon Arena. To do that I asked some of our sales professionals inside the EmploymentGuide.com their favorite moments at the historical arena. Here's what they had to say!

Ed Miles started the conversation by saying his favorite moment was the...

Summer of 1975 - Almond Brothers Concert and they opened the roof to The Civic Arena for the entire concert.....WOW!!

Jack Dibrell says...

...there have been so many. I remember watching Stevie Nicks backstage just seconds before climbing the steps to go onstage for her concert, clutching and holding on for dear life the hands of her backup singers. She was petrified and paralyzed with fear, stage fright, or whatever, but of course once she started her set, she KICKED BUTT!!

Then there were the times I met ZZ Top backstage for 'meet and greets' after their concerts, trying to avoid the temptation of pulling on those long, flowing beards!

Watching summer concerts with the Arena roof FULLY OPENED, and feeling like I was in a completely different venue!

And the few times I announced the halftime entertainment at Arena truck pulls.

Watching my son between periods at a Penguins game goal tend during a 'shootout' against another area amateur hockey team.

Being at Game 7 during the 1993 playoffs against the NY Islanders and LOSING, being eliminated after winning back-to-back Stanley Cups the previous two years!

Judy Hodges chimed in:

This is sad, I have only been to the arena three times in my life , besides all the job fair's  we've held there. The first time I went there to see the Barnum Bailey Circus when my children were 5 and 7. That same winter we went to see the ice capades. Both times were very special because of my children (1978!!)

I would have loved to go to the oldies etc. but haven't yet to date. Maybe one of these days. My biggest regret is not seeing it open.

What About You?

What is your favorite moment at Mellon Area? Was it a concert, a Penguins game, a family trip or one of our Pittsburgh job fairs?!

Whatever your favorite moment, we can all say the arena holds special times for all of us and that is why we are so excited to host one last job fair at Mellon. If you want to change your own future and find a new job or career that you can tell your kids, family or future generations about, you can also say you did it at Mellon Arena.

Pre-register for the Pittsburgh Job Fair here and tell us your favorite Mellon Arena moment in the comments below.

Mary Serves Up a Lesson to Pittsburgh Recruiters, Very Well Done With a Side of Reproach

We were reading other Pittsburgh related Blogs last night when we saw Pittsblog had endorsed the reading of a frustrated job seeker's blog outlining her search for a higher level position in the Pittsburgh area with nothing but frustration and unprofessionalism from the Pittsburgh recruitisphere to show for it. Our biggest interest came from Mary’s post concerning the attendance of a job fair that was held at PNC Park last June. We also decided to publicize her travail, because her experience relates to all job seekers and recruiters, whether entry level hourly jobs or highly experienced professional positions.

As an organization that also produces multiple large job fairs each year, we hear most often from the “other side”, that is, recruiters who have attended our job fairs. Though many successes have occurred for employers and job seekers at these events, we have seen a common thread running among the recruiters who complain the most about not finding qualified job candidates for the positions they have open. Mary makes the point very well from the job seekers standpoint.

Many recruiters, though with the best of intentions, simply are not people persons. That is, whether they are in Human Resources or head a department for their organization, they are not trained and are not good at engaging people in a public forum. We suppose most people who do this well are currently in Sales or Public Relations or Politics.

Unfortunately for Mary her disappointment in the behavior of recruiters came from expectations that were too high for what a job fair is all about (or of most value to job seekers). Job Fairs, especially for higher end positions, are more of a research mechanism than an actual interview opportunity. Also, she is correct that going to a job fair during the last hour of an event is less likely to get her quality time with the companies that remain (another bad habit of local recruiters is leaving before an event is over)

This does not offer to excuse the behavior of recruiters, only to explain them. Blog postings like Mary’s should go a long way in educating company decision makers about how much they are missing out on available Pittsburgh talent because they are so enthralled with their systems that they forget what their purpose is. Rude or belittling behavior is unprofessional. Period.

As for any other advice for Mary in her job search, please leave your comments and suggestions on her blog. It will be a shame for yet another intelligent professional job seeker to leave Pittsburgh for lack of opportunity (which are actually out there but unaccesable to those without connections). We suggest she contact The Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh, as they offer job search assistance for professionals as well as hourly.

City County Career Day Looming Large For September

With the job market in Pittsburgh turning a corner this year, what is being billed as the largest job fair in Pittsburgh history is taking shape for September 18th at the convention center in downtown Pittsburgh from 10AM to 3PM. Over 250 companies are expected to attend. The event is a partnership between the City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, PA CareerLink, the Builder’s Guild, the Pittsburgh Partnership, the Three Rivers Workforce Investment Board and the Sports and Exhibition Authority. The attendance goal is over 4,000 job seekers. This event is focusing on the building trades with multiple large construction projects slated to be under way in the next 2 years. There is now worry that the number of current workers available for these projects may not meet the demand. The Employment Guide is partnering to produce the event guide that will be distributed in The Employment Guide the full week before the event as well as at the event itself. This event guide will list many of the companies attending as well as the types of positions they are looking to fill.

If you are a potential company that would like to attend this event, please contact the PA CareerLink Pittsburgh office for more information. The cost for companies to attend has been kept to a minimum due to funding from the various partners and special cooperation by the Sports and Exhibition Authority. For job seekers, attendance is free with no pre-registration needed.

Seminars on many topics will be held throughout the day, including apprenticeship programs for all of the local building trade unions.

Although the focus of the event is on the building trades, it is by no means limited to that area. Companies from all walks of life will be found eagerly looking for a chance to speak with qualified job seekers. Many interviews will be held on the spot. Never have so many resources been available under one roof before. Stay tuned for more information as the event draws closer.

Friday Musings on the Pittsburgh Hourly Job Front

The hourly jobs environment in Pittsburgh appears to still be growing. We are seeing ad counts in many different recruitment media continue to grow. The outlook for the summer in Pittsburgh is as strong as we have seen since 2001.

Over 600 part time hourly workers have been hired directly for the US Open that starts this weekend at Oakmont Country Club.

We have been informed this morning the venue for our big job fair in July may not be available due to a possible new lease for the auditorium space we use on the concourse level. Stay tuned. If this turns out to be the case we have contingency plans for another venue.

The most difficult entry level to mid level skilled positions to hire for in Pittsburgh right now are nurses, sales people, truck drivers, mechanics and machinists. These seem to be the jobs where demand is currently far outstripping supply.

Stay tuned for an announcement soon on a new partnership between Comcast Cable in southwest Pennsylvania and the Employment Guide.
Comcast is rolling out some new products for their viewers that will add even more value not just for job seekers but also local consumers in general.

Job Fair Tips For Pittsburgh Area Company Recruiters

We have been holding job fairs in the Pittsburgh area now for over 6 years and we’re still amazed at how many employers show up completely unprepared to take advantage of this opportunity for face time with potential candidates.
Just as jobseekers can greatly effect the success they get from a job fair by following the tips listed below, so too can recruiters. Consistently, the companies and recruiters who tell us after an event they did not receive value from a job fair are the ones who sat stone faced behind their table while job seekers streamed by. Don’t be afraid to stand in FRONT of your table. Smile and shake hands. Make eye contact. Remember, you are representing your company to job seekers. The most qualified candidates are going to be choosier about whom they speak with. Be active around your table and engage them!
With that said, job seekers tend to go to job fairs to speak with specific companies they see ahead of time will be there. If you plan on attending a job fair, let potential candidates know ahead of time you will be there. Do not rely solely on the group ad run for a job fair to do this. A job fair is most effective if done as part of a process. Not as a single event. Do your own marketing ahead of time to let job seekers know you will be there. Otherwise, you will end up only speaking to candidates who came to the job fair to speak to someone else! Finally, have a plan in place to set up interviews after the job fair is over. Do not just rely on handing out collateral and hope good candidates will call you later. Show them they are important to you and the better ones will respond.
As a recruiter, following these tips will greatly enhance your job fair experience. We speak today about ROI, return on investment. Our experience has shown that the companies that do not like to do job fairs based on poor past experiences are they ones who failed the most to properly engage job seekers and follow these tips. Doing so will ultimately makes your jobs easier by increasing your likelihood of finding more qualified candidates resulting in less turnover down the road!

Job Fair Tips for Jobseekers

If you are planning on attending our big job fair coming up on March 28th, or any job fair around Pittsburgh, there are simple steps you can take to benefit the most from the time you’ve invested. Some of these may seem like common sense but you may be amazed how many attendees don’t follow these simple tips.
Our biggest single complaint we hear from company representative’s concern proper attire. Though a nice suit and tie will always make the best first impression, even clean and neat “business casual” will work wonders over what some people seem to think is appropriate. NEVER wear jeans or tee-shirts. Even for entry level hourly positions like restaurant/hospitality or housekeeping, employers will judge you by the clothes you wear. Making the effort to look nice will go a long way in getting a second interview and a chance for success.
Next would be to have a nice resume put together. Even if you have never used one before and don’t know where to start to create one, there are resources available, some free some for a fee, that will either show you how or actually create one for you. Two organizations that come to mind that can help in this area are PA Careerlink (the state employment offices) and the Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh. Contact them and the results will be fast!
Third, don’t be afraid to press some flesh and smile at the job fair. Even recruiters are human and always respond well to professionally friendly people like you. Shake hands and show your pearly whites! This will help you stand out from the many other jobseekers they have seen that day. Make eye contact and speak with confidence. Show them they can believe in you because you do!
Finally, don’t be afraid to use a job fair as a “practice interview”. Use this time to hone your skills at speaking about yourself. Even more important, use this time to practice asking questions and showing interest in the people and companies you meet with. This will improve your confidence when the time comes for a one-on-one interview with any potential employer.
Following these easy tips will greatly improve your chances of landing a job that excites you. They are effective at breaking the barrier between you and your perfect job. If you are in the midst of a job search we invite down to our job fair at the US Steel building on March 28th from 10:30 AM to 3:00PM. There will be 25-30 companies looking for many different types of positions. It’s free to attend and who knows, it just may change your life for the better. It’s all about opportunity!

Pittsburgh Job Information and Resources for Job Seekers and Recruiters!

Welcome to our blog! A great first 4 words that have started many such endeavors! The blog will be dedicated to both Job Seekers of Southwestern PA and Recruiters. We are developing some fantastic partnerships in the area, such as with The Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh and a couple of others that should be announced in the next month or so. Stay tuned. We hope to post information about resources available to help with the job seeking and recruiting process, general information about employment conditions in Pittsburgh and surrounding areas - concentrating especially in the hourly, blue collar non-exempt arena. We see so much in the news about high tech jobs in the Pittsburgh area, which is certainly fantastic (!) but it seems the hourly area has been practically ignored.

BTW, don't miss the big Job Fair coming up on March 28th, 2007 at the US steel building in downtown Pittsburgh. We'll have about 30-35 companies and many other resources for job seekers from the Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh, Commute Info and more. Pick up a copy of this weeks Employment Guide for more information.

Thanks For Reading!
